LTL freight must be packaged properly for secure and stable transit. If freight is not properly packaged, LTL carriers can refuse to pick it up.
Here is a general list of the most common shipping requirements for LTL freight:
- Palletized/Crated/Boxed/Toted
- Shrink-wrapped and banded
- Clear and detailed labels and packing slips
- Less than 5000 lbs per shipping unit
- General max dimensions per piece, Length < 20ft, Height < 97in, Width < 97in
Examples of improperly packaged freight:
- Loose articles not in packaging
- Boxes sitting on pallets with no shrink-wrap
- Products with excessive overhang on any side of a pallet (greater than 3in of overhang)
- Freight on wheels
