LTL freight must be packaged properly for secure and stable transit. If freight is not properly packaged, LTL carriers can refuse to pick it up.


Here is a general list of the most common shipping requirements for LTL freight:

  • Palletized/Crated/Boxed/Toted
  • Shrink-wrapped and banded
  • Clear and detailed labels and packing slips
  • Less than 5000 lbs per shipping unit
  • General max dimensions per piece, Length < 20ft, Height < 97in, Width < 97in


Examples of improperly packaged freight:

  • Loose articles not in packaging
  • Boxes sitting on pallets with no shrink-wrap
  • Products with excessive overhang on any side of a pallet (greater than 3in of overhang)
  • Freight on wheels
